Alaskan Malamute Breeder Education:
Before the 'puppies', there is the 'breeder' ...
People (puppy buyers) rarely stop to think about what the breeder has been doing to better themselves, with respect to care, maintenance and derstanding of dogs (and puppies). Have they taken any breeder education - breeding, nutrition, health - or courses, seminars, certificates - ANY training or formal education in these subject areas for dogs, puppies or a specific breed? Currently, I possess several canine and animal nutrition certifications (all taught by DVMs / board-certified animal nutritionists) along with First Aid Certification for Dogs, and obviously have attended other courses, lectures, electronic and in-person, which were more for general interest. I have a folder an inch thick with the certificates or outlines. Of the below courses, certificates, seminars or workshops, the courses indicated in with a bold / black title indicate I recieved a certificate (or credit / transcript) while those in light text were more informational, in nature (though no less important). I keep a book at home with all the certificates in it. Currently, I am only enrolled in two online university courses for Summer 2012, noted below. Anything else on this page is completed.
Although I have NO INTEREST in commercial teaching or training of dogs or their owners (I work as a professor full-time teaching humans computer subjects), I am interested in taking the SAME education and knowledge a behaviorist, veterinarian, or vet technician might have, for my Alaskan Malamutes. Many of the courses, certificates and seminars listed below are accredited, or aimed toward people who work with animals for a living. Others are geared toward 'sled dog,' in general. About 75% of them count toward continuing education' credits needed for animal professionals to keep their professional designations valid, in Canada and the USA. Some are from 'professional diplomas' (not regulated by a provincial, state or country government, but administered through recognized professional or trade organizations, instead). A few are regular Canada or USA university and college courses, both classroom and online. ALL are worthwhile. Unfortunately, most cost money (I noted the 'free' ones). Whether you're a dog owner, groomer, walker, breeder - or veterinarian - there are many educational opportunities available. I listed dates when the course was created, if available.
Of the courses, seminars, etc listed below and that I've participated in as a 'student', I've enjoyed most of them. Knowing 'some things' in advance definitely doesn't mean you will know all things. Most of the lecturers were given either by leaders in their fields, academically, or very well-known vocationalists (practitioners) in their disciplines. Gone are the days when education was not financially or physically possible due to distance. You can travel anywhere in the world via the Internet. Not one reputable college or university doesn't offer online or distance education courses - and you'd be surprised at just how many are relative to animals. In fact most of the vet technician programs in Canada (and the US) are now offered online with the practical component done during the Summer months. It's nice to find education that is 'just Alaskan Malamute' - but science and academics treat our breed as 'dogs' - because that is what they are; dogs. Some would say 'having Malamute litters or ownership is the best experience.' Certainly, practical training - hands-on and just 'doing it' - is a valuable learning methodology - but one which has a strong possibility of generating diseased or dead puppies and dogs, from lack of knowledge in remedying various negative situations until after a tragedy has occurred. My preference is to limit this, and seek information, knowledge and education in 'dogs' instead, so I am be better-prepared in making positive outcomes of negative situations and hopefully prevent them, entirely, before they happen - and not after - a tragedy.
