Dozie's first weight pull medal!

Once again we headed down to Marmora Snofest (I've been going more than a decade - Ernie, Bert, Ooky and Tinker have all competed and won gold medals at this event). Dozie came home with a second place for his weight class, it was his first snow pull! He had one qualifying leg toward his WWPD certificate, and though this is not it, the conditions were very tough of the dogs, and ALL of them did beautifully. We finished the weekend by training dogs for sledding, and helping out with the junior sledding race.

Purina Pawsway Demos

Once again we attended the Purina Pawsway Winterfest event in downtown Toronto over two weekends in December. The weather didn't co-operate so there were no sled rides this year - but we probably had the most number of onlookers, ever! I've been doing this for about five years, with a varied group of friends, who also bring their malamutes, and no matter what the weather conditions, we all have a very good time! Hundreds and hundreds of people had an opportunity to play with the dogs, ask questions, and listen to the 'breed demos' we gave in the auditorium. This was little Harry's first 'public demo'! He was a hit!

Doze went to the USA toward the end of November, taken by Zoë Quinn-Phillips, to an AMCA Specialty - and came home Winners Dogs (points). Very grateful to Zoe and Bonnie and Jim Martin, of Snocreek Malamutes for all the work they did with him, that weekend.

Little Dirty Hairy ...

Harry has joined the Slushpuppy Malamutes - he is from John Knight at Sledgerunner Alaskan Malamutes. I've only had Alaskan Malamutes from mostly one kennel - Yukonjak. Tala, Ernie and Ooky all came from Yukonjak. Bert came from a nice pet breeder in the USA. Ooky made Tinker, who in turn, made Dozer and Meme. I wanted to try something different. I've known John's dogs for almost a decade, and they are of exceedingly good working quality. About half the foundation of his kennel is actually half the foundation of Yukonjak (she had three dogs who were significantly Barrenfield-based). His dogs also carry an exceptional 'obedience' quality - only one of mine who does is Ernie. Harry rarely has a leash, comes when called, and doesn't run off. A very novel experience! He currently lives with Dozer and Tinker.

Dozer, aka Slushpuppy's Blackie Lawless, secured his FCC Championship this weekend! He is now UKC/FCC Slushpuppy's Blackie Lawless. Good boy Licky Monster! Unfortunately, I didn't get any photographs ...

Ms Ook, after nearly six years out of the show ring, won Best Veteran in Show over the Canada Day holidays! Nice to know that even as an older dog, she still has quality that's recognized!

Meme, Dozer, Tinker, Ernie bring Santa in for 2013

The puppies, Meme and Dozer, did a public demonstration, and helped provide sled rides to kids, adults, us - and Santa! There were other dogs there (including some of their relatives) and all took turns making sure many, many people were able to experience real sled rides with Alaskan Malamutes. The event was held between Purina Pawsway in Toronto Ontario and the Toronto Port Authority. It was a great time!

Meme, Dozer go to the Canadian National, Regional Specialty!

Meme (Slushpuppy's Voodoo Envy) and Dozer (Slushpuppy's Blackie Lawless) attended the Alaskan Malamute Club of Canada National and Regional Specialty for 2013. Tinker was also entered, but not shown, as the work of Chairing the Regional - and trying to show three dogs - was a bit too much for me. While Dozer and Meme were shown the first day, at the Regional Specialty, neither dog behaved for me, and neither dog accomplished much.

On the
National Specialty Saturday, however, Meme won both her class (12 - 18 month) under breeder judge, Jeremy Browne - and won Best Opposite Sex in Sweepstakes (her half brother Nanuke's Breathless at Howlingwind was Best in Sweepstakes) - and under longtime Alaskan Malamute breeder, and very well-respected judge, Kathleen Corkum! That was a very special win for little Meme, concluding her 'puppy career' of three show weekends - and who had not been shown in more than six months!

Dozer goes to the Alaskan Malamute Club of America National Specialty and Regional Specialty!

Dozer didn't have any 'big wins' while at the AMCA National or Regional Specialty, but he did have a good time. He also pulled almost 1000 pounds at the National Specialty Weight Pull. Jeri El Dissi and Alexis Kunkel showed him, and both did a great job! Michelle Podolak took him into the weight pulls and did a SPECTACULAR job with him, to see him pull that well at only 13 months of age!

Dozer earns his first WPD leg!

Dozer, along with Ernie, traveled up to Spiritrun to work on his first leg for Working Pack Dog certification (Ernie has all his legs for a title but went anyway, seeing as he is so well trained). Dozer had no issue carrying in the required weight, had a great time and successfully spent the night in a tent with his great great old uncle Ernie and I. He also chewed his leash off a tree ... fortunately, he didn't realize he was loose, so nothing bad happened.

    the Cyberc@t

By trade I have been a journalist, photo technician, photographer, and art director. For the past 15 years however I've worked in media and design education. I still love to shoot portrait photographs of Alaskan Malamutes, along with action and other types of pictures.

These days I teach multimedia subjects, including basic, intermediate, and advanced Web subjects (without the coding), photography, writing and design. I have no desire however to work commercially - and so my dogs Web sites gives me an opportunity to explore Web technologies in a 'real-world' context.

While I know and use about 100 software applications, things like Weebly (what this version of my site is built in), provide invaluable insight into how 'normal' people (the bulk of the computer world) might use or create for the Internet and not just the tech community with which I am associated.

The dogs are my 'pets' while their Web site is my electronic playground :)
